There has been a warning that some traditional county agricultural shows in Wales could face a bleak future.

The Pembrokeshire Show in Haverfordwest is celebrating its golden anniversary and hopes to attract close to 100,000 visitors during the next three days.

But an annual event in neighbouring Carmarthenshire has been scrapped with poor public support, fewer volunteers and declining sponsorship blamed.

Similar events in other parts of Wales have been hit by bad weather this year.

The Members and Committee of St. Mellons Agricultural Show wish to state the following conditions which apply during the preparation for the Show, during the event itself and whilst exhibitions ae dismantled. All exhibitors, retailers, caterers, equipment suppliers, event organisers and members of the public should ensure that they that they comply with all current Health & Safety Executive Legislation and guidelines, and in particular.

  1. Showground signs with special notice to tie paid to those denoting areas to which access is restricted to members of the public and or animals and vehicles.
  2. No Gas appliances or portable generators may be used on the Show field that have not been recently examined and tested by a competent person. Appliances used should be labelled to indicate examiners name and date of examination.
  3. Persons who supply or loan equipment for use by the organisers or members of the public must ensure that 1 complies fully with current legislation and standard relevant to its proposed use that it is properly maintained.
  4. Any stream or pressure vessel or lifting appliance used ot demonstrated must have undergone a recent inspection, should be labelled accordingly and should be appropriately insured.
  5. Fairground devices (including all passenger carrying rides) are only allowed on the basis that the Codes of Practice at Fairs' has been observed and understood by alt operators.
  6. Any use of equipment by persons under the age of 13 years of age is prohibited.
  7. Any accidents or injuries should be reported immediately to the secretary's tent, where First Aid will be available.
  8. Riders of horses should wear hats conforming to the relevant British Standards for the activity.
  9. Access to Show Rings is restricted to persons involved in the organisation of the event and Exhibitors / Competitors.
  10. All emergency access routes will be clearly indicated and should not be obstructed by vehicles at any time.
  11. All exhibitors and competitors should be aware of the Show Committee Health and Safety Policy Statement, copies of which are available in Advance or in the Secretary's tent on Show day. Anyone who breaks the rules of the society or who contravenes any of the conditions laid out in the Health and Safety Policy Statement will be asked to leave the Showground.

This show is affiliated to Wales & Border Counties Agricultural and Horse Shows Association, C.H.A.P.S, British Show Pony Association, British Show Jumping Association, South West Pony Association, Ponies Association(UK), Welsh Pony & Cob Society, Royal Horticultural Society, National Dahlia Society, National Vegetable Society, British Rabbit Council, Suffolk Sheep Society, Jacob Sheep Society, Texel Society, Dexter Cattle Society, Cage Bird Society, Kennel Club and is subject to the rules thereof.

Objections which can only be lodged by Competitors in the Class concerned must be in writing and delivered to the Secretary within 30 minutes of the judging of the particular lass to which the objection relates, accompanied by a deposit of £100.00, B.S.J.A. which will be forfeited if the objection is not sustained.

The decision of the Objection Committee appointed to consider objections, protests or any dispute, is final.

The Committee reserve to themselves the right to refuse entries without explanation.

All exhibits are shown at Owners' risk

All Competitors shall carry out Stewards' instructions.

The Association, its officers or servants shall not be responsible for any accident, damage or loss, however caused, that may occur to any Exhibitor, or his servant, or to any animal, article or property whilst on the Show ground or whilst entering or leaving.

Brucellosis accredited cattle only to be entered.

Young handlers under 16 must be under the supervision of a competent handler.

Any Competitor not adhering to the Rules of the Association will forfeit all prize money won in any previous events.

Protective headwear must be worn by all Competitors to comply with respective Society Rules

Entries in the jumping classes are restricted to horses or ponies registered with the B.S.J.A. and ridden by members according to B.S.J.A. rule 79.

PASSES WILL NOT BE SENT UNLESS ENTRY FEES ARE SENT WITH ENTRY FORMS.

No entries will be refunded on the Show Day without a current Vet's certificate.

No exhibit is to leave the Show Ground before 5.00pm unless by permission of the Stewards in charge of the Class.

All prize winners in Livestock and Horse & Pony Sections must enter the Grand Parade, otherwise prize money shall be forfeited.

NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED WHATSOEVER.

Rules - District Classes

In classes confined to the District, the district refered to comprises:
St Mellons, Llanedeyrn, Rumney, Peterstone Wentloog, Marshfield, St. Brides (Wentloog), Coedkernew, Lisvane, Michaelstone-y-Vedw, Bassaleg, Llanvedw, Rudry, Lower Machen, Upper Machen, Rogerstone, Bedwas and Rhiwderin.

A competitor in those Classes must reside or have land in the above area.

A "member" is a contributor of at least £5 to the funds of the Association.
