Childrens' tug of war steam engine challenge

This year we plan to hold a tug of war competition between any brave, strong, and eager children, and one of the steam engines that will be attending. This will take place immediately after the parade of vintage vehicles - around 2pm. It is most likely that we will ask Hogwart to challenge you - a half-size McLaren Road Locomotive. However, don't think for one second that this will be a push over! Hogwart weighs in at over four ton and is more than capable of fulling a full size engine as shown below.

Wanted - Exhibits for Vintage Section

The St Mellons Show typically has about 30 entries each year in the vintage section ranging from small stationary engines, tractors, a D2 Caterpillar, to steam engines af various types and sizes. We are always keen to broaden this section to include suitable exhibits which have an agricultural bias. If you have suitable items please contact me (Carl on 07779 632490) to ask for entry details.

In 1999 Mrs. Pam Robertson decided to sponsor an annual prize in fondest memory of her husband�s long association with St. Mellons Agricultural Show, and his life-long interest in vintage and agricultural machinery.

This prize is to be awarded again this year. It will be awarded to one of the exhibitors of the Vintage Section at the St. Mellons Agricultural Show. The prize is unusual in that the exhibitors themselves will select the recipient. By this means it is hoped that everybody will have a fairer chance of winning regardless of the type of exhibit.

A number of conditions were agreed in 1999 with the introduction of this prize (click "read more" below for more information)

1. The competition is to be light-hearted and friendly. It therefore does not matter if, for example, the winning entry is not concours, or the oldest, or the most valuable, etc.

2. That each exhibitor selects three exhibits that he/she "likes the best" � for whatever reason � and these exhibit numbers are entered below in order of preference.

3. Each exhibitor will only have one voting slip regardless of the number of exhibits he/she has brought to the show.

4. Multiple exhibits of the same exhibitor can NOT be voted for.

5. To further promote the light-hearted nature of this prize no exhibitor can win the prize more than once every five consecutive show years. This condition applies to the named exhibitor regardless of any change in exhibit.

Steam engines at 2008 St. Mellons Show

This year there will be a range of traction engines, from miniatures to full size, including a new engine to the area, a half-size McLaren Road Locomotive modelled on Boadicea. There may even be a partially rebuilt engine that is currenly undergoing a total restoration - see below.
